VERY rough, but do we like this photo better? I will also try the green bottles. Any ideas for type?

Still playing with the vertical photo across the horizontal layout. Ramon suggested FIG, and I think it's interesting - I'm just not sure if it fits my style... I tried layering outlines over type too - I know it's waaaay rough still, but am I at least going in the right direction??? Also, I think the line between the photo and the type is too rigid, so I'll be working on that too. Now that I'm I'm looking at the layouts next to each other, I think the one with FIG is definitely stronger... I'm liking it. What can I do to improve? Do you agree about the line between headline and image being too rigid?

HELP!

I'm stuck on this idea, but I don't think it's quite there yet - especially the type. Does anyone have any suggestions/comments on the last couple posts?

Ramon had me try Miller with my "flip side" headline, and it got me thinking about the famous Man Ray photo - the italic "f" looks like the violin thingys he did, so I took it and ran with it... I tried changing up the photo too.

Start Over?

I am having major problems getting my idea to come together - I feel like my images aren't strong enough and I've been having trouble nailing down my features/departments too, not sure what should be the features and what should be the departments...

I know it's getting late, but I'm just at a loss. I've been thinking and working on this as much as I can, but it feels like I'm getting nowhere. Now I'm thinking about changing my concept - I think I need something more specific, again, I am not sure what. Maybe a mag about art in NY? I don't know! Any ideas?

Grid Systems

I was reading the grid book last night and came across a paragraph that explains the traditional designer's process before we had the convenience of computers - can you imagine?

"Practice is needed to sketch texts realistically on the very smallest format. The best solution is for the designer to draw the typeface to scale whenever he can. He must feel confident with the shapes and proportions of the various alphabets and be able to sketch them from memory." (!)
